Terms of Service for Episteme OSS

Last updated: May 22, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") apply to the open-source editions of Episteme ("Episteme OSS", "we", "us", or "our") that link to these Terms, including builds distributed through GitHub, F-Droid, similar open-source channels, and the OSS Offline build where applicable.

By downloading, installing, modifying, distributing, or using Episteme OSS, you agree to these Terms and to the Episteme OSS Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use this edition of the app.

1. Open-Source License

Episteme OSS source code is made available under the open-source license stated in the project repository, currently the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 (AGPL-3.0), unless a file states a different license. Third-party libraries and assets are governed by their own licenses.

These Terms do not reduce rights you receive under the AGPL-3.0 or other applicable open-source licenses. If these Terms conflict with a mandatory right granted by an open-source license for the OSS code, that open-source license controls for that code.

2. No Standard Account, Billing, or Cloud Services

Episteme OSS does not include Episteme Standard account services, Google Sign-In for an Episteme account, Google Drive cloud sync, Firebase account sync, Episteme Pro purchase verification, Google Play Billing, Episteme credits, or Episteme server-backed AI. Features available in the standard edition may be absent, disabled, replaced by local behavior, or implemented differently in OSS.

3. Your Content

You keep ownership of books, documents, annotations, metadata, prompts, outputs, settings, and other content you use with Episteme OSS. You are responsible for ensuring that you have the legal right to import, read, modify, store, sync locally, process, and share that content.

4. Optional Network Features

The online OSS build may include optional network features such as OPDS catalogs, font downloads, external links, dictionary lookups, or bring-your-own-key AI requests. You are responsible for the services you connect to, the content you access, and compliance with third-party terms, copyright rules, and applicable laws. The OSS Offline build is intended to disable network-backed features, but modified builds may behave differently.

5. Bring Your Own Key AI

If you configure your own API key for AI, cloud text-to-speech, recap, dictionary, summarization, or similar features, you are responsible for:

  • Keeping the key secret and revoking it if exposed.
  • All costs, quota usage, rate limits, and provider account activity tied to the key.
  • Understanding the provider's privacy, retention, logging, training, and acceptable-use terms.
  • Ensuring you have permission to send selected document text, page images, prompts, and outputs to that provider.

Episteme OSS does not guarantee provider availability, output accuracy, pricing, privacy behavior, or compatibility.

6. OPDS Catalogs and Third-Party Content

Episteme OSS may let you browse or add OPDS catalogs and external sources. We do not control, host, or verify third-party catalog content. You are responsible for the legality, safety, licenses, and accuracy of content you access or download.

7. Contributions and Modified Builds

If you contribute to the upstream project, contribution terms may be governed by the project's contributor license agreement or contribution process. If you modify, redistribute, or publish your own builds, you are responsible for complying with the AGPL-3.0, third-party licenses, platform rules, privacy obligations, and any notices required for your changes.

8. Prohibited Uses

You agree not to use Episteme OSS to violate law, infringe rights, bypass access controls, distribute malware, abuse third-party services, or process content you do not have permission to use. You also agree not to misrepresent modified builds as official builds.

9. No Warranty

EPISTEME OSS IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE". TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, NON-INFRINGEMENT, AVAILABILITY, SECURITY, AND ERROR-FREE OPERATION.

10. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOSS OF DATA, CONTENT, PROFITS, REVENUE, GOODWILL, API KEY USAGE, PROVIDER CHARGES, OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY ARISING FROM OR RELATING TO EPISTEME OSS.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Courts located in Delhi, India will have exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or Episteme OSS, except where applicable law requires otherwise.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. The latest version will be posted on this page with an updated date.
