Standard Edition
Terms of Service for Episteme Standard
Last updated: May 22, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the standard edition of Episteme ("Episteme", "we", "us", or "our"). The standard edition includes Episteme distributed through Google Play, Episteme Pro features, Episteme for Windows Standard, and future official standard builds for other platforms that link to these Terms.
By downloading, installing, purchasing, signing in to, or using Episteme Standard, you agree to these Terms and to the Episteme Standard Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use this edition of the app.
1. The Standard Edition
Episteme Standard is the full-featured official edition of the app. It may include proprietary code, proprietary services, paid features, Google Sign-In, cloud sync, purchase verification, server-backed AI, cloud text-to-speech, diagnostics, and platform-specific libraries. Some features may be available only on certain platforms, accounts, versions, or regions.
2. Accounts and Security
Some features require Google Sign-In or another supported account system. You are responsible for keeping your account, device, and credentials secure. You must notify us if you believe your account has been compromised. You may not share, sell, or abuse account access, Pro entitlements, credits, or device slots.
3. Purchases, Pro Features, and Credits
Episteme may offer paid features, including a Pro unlock, credit packs, subscriptions, or other purchases. Payments are processed by the relevant platform or billing provider, such as Google Play Billing on Android. We do not control platform payment flows, taxes, chargebacks, or store refund tooling.
- Pro features: Pro unlocks give access to the features described in the app at the time of purchase, subject to platform availability and reasonable changes over time.
- Credits: Credits may be consumed by server-intensive features such as cloud TTS, recap, summarization, dictionary, or other AI tools. Credit usage is metered according to the app's current rules.
- Refunds: Purchases are final except where refunds are required by law or by the applicable store policy.
- Availability: We may change, pause, retire, or replace specific paid features when required for technical, security, provider, legal, or platform reasons.
4. Your Content
You keep ownership of the books, documents, annotations, metadata, prompts, and other content you import or create in Episteme ("User Content"). You are responsible for ensuring you have the rights needed to import, store, read, sync, process, and use that content.
You grant us a limited, non-exclusive license to process User Content only as needed to provide the features you choose, including local reading, rendering, importing, file conversion, indexing, cloud sync, backup, AI processing, cloud TTS, support, troubleshooting, and security.
5. Cloud Sync and Storage
If you enable cloud sync, Episteme may upload, download, update, and delete files and metadata needed to keep your library, reading progress, annotations, shelves, and device state in sync. This may include use of Google Drive appDataFolder, Firebase, Firestore, or other backend services. You are responsible for keeping your own backups of important files.
6. OPDS, Downloads, and Third-Party Content
Episteme may let you browse public or custom OPDS catalogs, open external links, or download content from third-party services. We do not control those services and are not responsible for their availability, accuracy, legality, safety, licenses, or content. You are responsible for complying with applicable copyright, license, and access rules.
7. AI and Cloud Processing
When you use AI, recap, summarization, dictionary, cloud TTS, OCR, or similar features, Episteme may process selected text, page images, document excerpts, generated prompts, outputs, and usage metadata through our backend and service providers. AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete, or inappropriate for your context. You are responsible for reviewing output before relying on it.
If you use bring-your-own-key features, you are responsible for your provider account, API keys, quotas, costs, and compliance with that provider's terms. Requests made with your key are governed by the provider you choose.
8. Intellectual Property and License
Episteme Standard, including its proprietary code, branding, user interface, services, and original materials, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by copyright, trademark, and other laws. We grant you a limited, personal, revocable, non-transferable license to use the app as provided to you, subject to these Terms.
Third-party open-source components remain governed by their respective licenses. The open-source edition of Episteme is separately available under its own open-source license terms. Nothing in these Terms restricts rights you may have under applicable open-source licenses for those components.
9. Prohibited Uses
You agree not to:
- Use Episteme in violation of law, third-party rights, platform rules, or provider terms.
- Import, sync, distribute, or process content you do not have permission to use.
- Abuse, overload, scrape, resell, or automate access to our cloud, AI, purchase, or account services.
- Circumvent credit limits, device limits, entitlement checks, security controls, or usage restrictions.
- Reverse engineer or attempt to extract proprietary source code except where allowed by law or by an applicable open-source license.
- Use the service to generate or distribute unlawful, harmful, abusive, or infringing content.
10. Updates and Changes
We may update the app, services, features, pricing, credit rules, provider integrations, and these Terms. Some updates may be required for security, platform compliance, or continued service operation. Continuing to use the app after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
11. Suspension and Termination
You may stop using Episteme at any time. We may suspend or terminate access to account-backed, paid, cloud, or AI services if we reasonably believe you violated these Terms, created risk to the service, abused provider resources, or if we must do so for legal, security, or platform reasons.
12. Disclaimers

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR USE OF EPISTEME, YOUR CONTENT, YOUR BACKUPS, YOUR API KEYS, YOUR PROVIDER ACCOUNTS, AND YOUR COMPLIANCE WITH APPLICABLE LAWS AND LICENSES.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR CLAIMS RELATING TO THE STANDARD EDITION WILL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID TO US FOR THE APP OR SERVICES IN THE TWELVE MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM, OR TEN U.S. DOLLARS (US $10).
